
Short films reward economy: every scene must advance the story, reveal character, establish a world, or change the emotional state. AI video lowers some production barriers, but it does not remove the need for a script, coverage, continuity, sound, selection, and editing.
The most reliable first project is three to five minutes, one or two locations, and no more than two central characters. Avoid crowded action and plots that depend on perfect object permanence until your workflow is proven.
Step 1: choose an AI-friendly story
Strong starting formats include:
- single-location drama;
- montage or mood piece;
- visually defined genre such as noir, science fiction, horror, or western;
- one-character study;
- documentary-style fictional narrative.
Compress the three-act structure:
- Setup: establish protagonist, place, and problem.
- Confrontation: escalate through discoveries and decisions.
- Resolution: deliver a change, answer, or intentional open ending.
Each scene should do two jobs. A location reveal can also build tension; a conversation can also expose the world.
Step 2: create a shot breakdown
Do not generate from the screenplay alone. Build a table:

Step 3: preserve character consistency
Create a character bible under roughly 60 words:
CHARACTER ANCHOR — Mara: fictional engineer, early 40s, short black hair with one silver streak, angular jaw, tired brown eyes, small scar above the left eyebrow, plain navy technical uniform without logos, slim build, medium height.Paste the same anchor into every relevant prompt. Prepare front, three-quarter, profile, full-body, expression, and costume references. Select a “hero frame” from the best approved generation and use it as the starting image when the workflow allows.
- Wide shots tolerate less facial detail.
- Medium shots require the full anchor.
- Close-ups need multiple takes and strict review.
- Inserts of hands, objects, or eyes can carry emotion without exposing a drifting full face.
Use only fictional or fully authorized identities. Obtain informed consent for any real face or voice and never create deceptive impersonation, non-consensual sexual content, political manipulation, or fraud.
Step 4: direct with composition, transitions, and light
Camera angle communicates meaning:
- low angle: power or threat;
- high angle: vulnerability or surveillance;
- Dutch angle: instability;
- eye level: natural dialogue;
- point of view: identification and immersion.
Plan visual rhythm before generation. Contrast a wide with a close-up, match similar shapes or motions, use a smash cut for a tonal break, or create compatible endpoints for a dissolve. DeepFake's video transition workflow can help plan controlled handoffs.
Describe lighting every time: source, direction, quality, color, and contrast. Repeat the same setup across one scene so the grade does not have to repair a different world in every shot.
Step 5: design three audio layers
Plan:
- Ambient bed: continuous station hum, forest wind, traffic, or room tone.
- Foreground events: footsteps, tools, doors, typing, fabric, or impacts.
- Voice or dialogue: one clearly directed speaker where possible.
Keep generated dialogue brief and conversational. State the line, emotion, vocal quality, space, and background:

Step 6: generate and review in batches
- Write all prompts for one scene.
- Generate two or three takes of every critical shot.
- Review character, action, geometry, light, and audio.
- Rename approved takes by shot number immediately.
- Log prompt, filename, status, and repair notes.

export/When a shot fails, isolate the variable. Test the environment without the character, the character without motion, or the camera without dialogue. Change one element at a time.
Step 7: edit, grade, and mix
The rough cut determines whether the story works. Remove beautiful shots that do not earn their place.
For color:
- match exposure, black, and white levels using scopes;
- correct skin tone and white balance;
- establish one base look;
- add scene-specific mood afterward.
For pace, let an establishing shot breathe, shorten cuts as tension rises, and hold the reaction before a payoff. Use music with proper rights and choose it early enough to influence rhythm.
For sound, create a continuous room-tone bed across cuts, repair generated artifacts, match dialogue volume and reverb, then add music beneath speech. A consistent soundscape can unify visuals that vary slightly.
Step 8: export and distribute honestly
Create a high-quality horizontal master, then make platform-specific versions rather than cropping blindly. Reframe important subjects for vertical output, add captions and titles in the editor, and verify delivery requirements for resolution, codec, audio, and duration.
Disclose AI use where a platform, festival, client, or viewer context requires it. Check current submission rules and tool terms rather than relying on a static article. Keep records of source assets, licenses, prompts, consent, and model versions.
Advanced techniques
Shot stacking
Extend a scene through coverage:
- wide corridor entrance;
- medium front-facing walk;
- close reaction;
- point-of-view reveal;
- over-the-shoulder stop at a door.
Five short clips can imply one continuous 30-second scene without asking one generation to maintain everything.
Visual motif
Repeat an image at structural moments. A hand touches a blinking red light in the opening, trembles near the same light at the midpoint, and hovers after the light stops at the climax. The repetition turns clips into a story.
Hybrid production
Use live footage for dialogue and reliable human performance, then generate environments, cutaways, inserts, or establishing shots. Match lens language, light, grain, and grade across both sources.
Production checklist
- concise logline and three-act outline;
- shot breakdown with coverage and transitions;
- approved character and location references;
- one prompt grammar used consistently;
- audio plan for every scene;
- multiple takes for high-risk shots;
- clear file and prompt logging;
- rough cut before expensive finishing;
- unified grade and continuous room tone;
- rights, consent, disclosure, and distribution checks.
Start with a three-shot proof using text-to-video or an approved reference in image-to-video. If the protagonist, location, light, and audio survive the test, expand into the full short. The final film will still be defined by selection, rhythm, and storytelling—not the number of clips generated.
